Hand Broom Foundations @ Pine Croft School, KY7/5

  • Join Amanda Lee Lazorchack of Please Send Word and Hunter Elliot for an introduction to hand broom construction. We will discuss broomcorn, the tools and materials needed to make brooms, the essential techniques for building a lasting broom with style. You will learn to make several brooms in this high-engagement one-day class.

    Moderate hand and body strength required. All levels welcome. Lunch provided by Pine Croft.


Advanced Approaches to Hand Broom @ Pine Croft School, KY 7/6 & 7/7

  • Join Amanda Lee Lazorchack of Please Send Word and Hunter Elliot for a two-day deep dive into hand brooms. Many styles are on the table as we apply a variety of techniques to achieve advanced results. We will cover multiple forms & materials, plaiting, design and more. This class will be hosted in the Berea Student Craft Broom Studio- a unique & spirited container for such a class - you will be surrounded by bundles of colorful sorghum, walls of wild brooms & historic shop equipment.

    Prior experience in broom-making is highly recommended.
    The previous broom class, Hand Broom Foundations will prepare you for this advanced class.
    Moderate hand and body strength required.  Lunch provided by Pine Croft.

  • The call to tend the hearth never ends. Thankfully, the broom is never a dull tool! Spend your weekend creating beautiful and functional hand brooms in traditional and contemporary styles. Learn about the history and significance of broom making while learning the foundations of hand broom construction. Moderate hand and body strength required. All levels welcome.

  • A unique way to engage in hand craft, broom making is a delightful skill. Jump right in and learn the techniques to bind traditional brooms. Discuss the history & significance of this well-loved tool while laughing at broom puns. Start by creating a variety of hand brooms, then apply your skills to larger handled sweeps while we explore the relationship between sculpture and tool. You also will learn to sort broom corn and naturally finish wooden handles. Moderate hand & body strength required.
